North Kenya Roads
You hear about it. It’s all that any one can talk about. You read the blogs in advance. The pain and suffering. The saddle sores, the bent rims and broken spirits. It’s Northern Kenya and it’s designed to break you. When we arrived at the border town of Marsabit the border official smirked when I told him we are biking to Naroibi. This is one of the worst roads in Africa. It is so desolate...

Out of Ethiopia...
Two important things to note about Ethiopia 1) Its more beautiful then I could have ever imagined. 2) You will be amazed by how quickly you lose all sense of personal space. Ethiopia has been and gone.  Previous participants had prepared me for the gong show, by my boss by everyone.  Why travel down the looking glass?  You must only be mad to want to travel through Ethiopia.  But if you let it...

What a Gondor
3 days into the new section and it’s an absolute gong show.  Crashes, broken trucks and late nights..one incident after another.  The riders are absolutely shattered after 7 days of seriously difficult riding. We took them off the madness of the busy highway and onto the quiet country dirt roads.  Through villages, national parks and up mountains.  As difficult as it is beautiful, these past...

Tea with the tuktuk driver
Arriving in Sudan is a breath of fresh air…seriously.  The peace that we are all feeling after the madness that is Egypt is indescribable.  The people here are nothing that you would expect.  The smiles and waves that we get from the side of the road make you feel instantly at home.  Some of us risked the crocodiles for a dip in the Nile. This job is seriously cool.  Our second night in...

Adjusting to the pace of tour life
You wake up every morning with tasks rolling through your head.  Don’t forget to talk to this rider about their race time, find the Tour Director and make sure they have all their needs met before breakfast. Drink coffee, don’t forget to lube your chain before getting on the bike.  Jam, stuff elbow your gear back into your locker.  Unpack your locker after realizing your bike shoes are...

Cairo Traffic Jam - aka Day One
130 km (ish) Focused on keeping the Cairo traffic at by was taking my full focus. Paying attention to the signs to give riders estimates but otherwise trying to ensure that the intersections were kept clear to protect the riders was job one.  It wasn’t until our Tour Director rode up to me and asked if I was looking left.  I was focusing on the incoming traffic and had yet to look up.  In...

Travel distance: 515 miles And so it begins… Another chapter in the long history of Kelsey’s over-the-top adventures. It started in 2007 with Cancervive. Sure I can ride a bike…to Austin… I had the fortune to celebrate my 27th birthday in Austin TX receiving 28 birthday bumps (one for good luck) from some truly amazing teammates. When I turned 28 I did the Kelowna...
